Paadal Petra Sthalams: the Tevaram temples

The Paadal Petra Sthalams, ‘places that received a song’, are the Shiva temples praised in the Tevaram, the hymns of the three Nayanar saints Thirugnana Sambandar, Thirunavukkarasar (Appar) and Sundarar, who walked from shrine to shrine in the 7th and 8th centuries singing Mahadev’s glory.

276temples

Nambiyandar Nambi gathered their hymns into the first seven books of the Tirumurai under the Chola king Rajaraja I. The count usually given is 274 or 275; the list kept by temple scholars and given here has 276, including Tiruvidaivai, whose hymn was recovered from an inscription in the 20th century. Most are in the Kaveri delta of Chola Nadu; others are in the Tondai, Pandya, Nadu and Kongu countries, two in Sri Lanka, Gokarna on the western coast, and the northern group of Srisailam, Kedarnath, Kailash and two Himalayan shrines whose sites are not certain. Each is named here by its Tevaram name, with today’s place and the name of the Lord in brackets.
