01The conch and the linga

Sangu is the conch. The temple says Bhagwan Vishnu worshipped Sankaranyeswarar here and was given the Panchajanya, and He stands with Sridevi and Bhudevi in the western prakaram. When gingelly oil is poured on the swayambhu linga and a lamp is held close, fine hair-like lines show on its surface. As a maadakoil it has no tall gopuram and one narrow entrance; the sanctum stands on a raised floor reached by steps from the south. The shrines follow the Somaskanda order, Shiva, then Murugan, then Amman, from left to right. Sambandar’s padigam is in the second Tirumurai.
