01Murugan’s penance

The village takes its name from Murugan. The temple’s katha says that after the war with Surapadma, Bhagwan Murugan came here to be freed of the sin of slaying, and worshipped Shiva, who is therefore Tirumuruganatheswarar, the Lord worshipped by Murugan. For the same reason those troubled in mind are brought here to stay and pray. The temple is Kongu Chola work of about the tenth century and, unusually for a Tamil temple, has no rajagopuram.

02Sundarar robbed

Sundarar was returning from Kodungallur with gifts from his friend Cheraman Perumal, the Chera king and Nayanar, when hunters fell on his party near this village and took everything. The robbers were Shiva’s own ganas, sent so that Sundarar would come and sing here. He sang a padigam that half scolds the Lord for living in a place where travellers are robbed, and the goods were found heaped at the temple. The hymn is in the seventh Tirumurai, and the Brahmotsavam of Masi is held for Sundarar.
