01The golden cymbals

Sambandar was three when Mata Parvati fed him the milk of wisdom at the tank of the Sirkazhi temple, and from then he went from shrine to shrine singing. At Tirukolakka he sang keeping time by clapping his small hands, and his palms grew red. The Periya Puranam says Shiva placed a pair of golden thalam, cymbals, in his hands, inscribed with the Panchakshara. So the Lord here is Thalamudaiyar, he who owns the cymbals, and the Devi who gave them their ring is Osai Kodutha Nayaki, she who gave the sound. Sambandar and Sundarar sang the shrine.

02A quiet shrine of Sirkazhi

Tirukolakka lies in Sirkazhi, a short walk from the great Brahmapureeswarar temple where Sambandar received the milk. Its old name is Saptapuri. The temple is small, and those who bring children who are slow to speak come here to pray to the Devi who gave sound. During the Tirumulaippal festival at Sirkazhi in Chittirai, devotees walk between the two temples.
