Arasaleeswarar Temple, Tiru Arasili (Ozhindiyapattu)

Arasu is the peepal. Shiva appeared to the sage Vamadeva from a peepal tree here, and the small swayambhu linga carries the scar of a king’s arrow. Pradosham worship here is especially honoured.

01The peepal and the arrow

The temple’s katha says Vamadeva, standing under a peepal, wished that Shiva would appear there, and he did, on a Pradosham day. Another katha tells of King Sathyavardhan, whose flower garden was being stripped by a deer; his arrow missed the deer and struck the peepal, and blood flowed from it. The linga is small, under a canopy of 108 rudraksha beads, and bears the mark. Sambandar sang one padigam here. The temple’s bronzes were stolen and were recovered by the Tamil Nadu Police idol wing in 2009.
