01Lamps of water

Naminandi Adigal found the lamps of Araneri running low one evening and went asking for ghee; those he asked mocked him and said to use water. He prayed, a voice told him to fill the lamps from the tank, and they burned bright through the night. The Periya Puranam tells it, and Appar sang of it. The shrine faces west in the south-east corner of the second prakaram of the Thyagaraja temple. Its inscriptions record that Sembiyan Mahadevi rebuilt it in stone and endowed 234 kasu for its worship and repair, and tradition holds that its vimana was the model for the great vimana at Thanjavur.
