01The pot and the river
At the deluge the pot holding the seed of creation floated south; Shiva as a hunter broke it with an arrow, and its pieces fell at Kumbakonam, here, and at Kudavasal. Kalayam is the pot, and so Kalayanallur. Sundarar’s ten verses, in the seventh Tirumurai, paint the place he saw: lotus tanks on every side, children at play startling black buffaloes into the Arasalar, fish leaping, bees rising from the flowers. The tenth verse names Brahma as a worshipper. Within the walls are a Saptamatrika panel cut from one stone, a Lingodbhava in green stone, and a four-armed Dakshinamurti holding fire and a palm-leaf book. The temple joins the Sapta Sthanam palanquin procession after Mahamaham.
