01Thurai kaattum vallal

Thurai is a ford or bank. The temple’s katha tells of a devotee, Arulvithan, who carried flowers to the Lord daily and once held his basket above his head through a rising flood until the Lord showed him a safe crossing. When Sambandar came, the Kaveri was again in spate; a hunter appeared, told him to follow, and the waters gave way. On the far bank the hunter was gone. So the Lord is Thuraikattum Vallalar, the generous one who shows the ford. Veyuru Tholi Ammai, whose shoulders are like bamboo, holds the conch and discus in her separate shrine. The temple is one of the five Dakshinamurti shrines around Mayiladuthurai.
