01The cracked linga

The Devi’s name, Kuyilmozhi, means she whose speech is the koel’s song. Mahakala, Shiva’s attendant, and the siddha Kaduveli Siddhar are named among those who worshipped here. The linga is swayambhu, its top split into three with one part fallen, so the crown looks scooped out. Sambandar’s verse calls Makalam the place where the pure of heart come with flowers to adorn the Lord who wears spotless ash, rides the bull and wears the hide of the elephant he flayed.
