Onakantheeswarar Temple, Onakanthanthali, Kanchipuram

Here Sundarar sang to Shiva for gold, and the tamarinds of the tree are said to have turned to gold. Two asura captains, Onan and Kanthan, gave the shrine its name.

01Tamarinds of gold

Onan and Kanthan, captains of the asura Banasura, found a linga in the forest and became devotees; a third, Jalandhara, joined them, and the three lingas stand in separate shrines behind one entrance. Sundarar sang a padigam here, in the Seventh Tirumurai, asking the Lord for gold. The katha says Shiva moved towards a tamarind tree and the tamarinds became gold. A Vinayaka called Vayirunthi Pillaiyar has a shrine of his own. Like most Kanchi Shiva temples, Onakanthanthali has no separate Devi shrine; Kamakshi is the Devi of them all.
