Sargunanathar Temple, Idumbavanam

Idumbavanam takes its name from Idumban, who worshipped Shiva here and was freed. Devotees come to be rid of the fear of death, for Yama too is said to have prayed here.

01Yama’s penance

When Yama reached for the boy Markandeya and Shiva struck him down, Yama had to atone. The temple’s katha says he came here to worship Sargunanathar, and Brahma, Agastya and Shri Rama are also named among the worshippers. Agastya is said to have seen the wedding form of Shiva and Parvati here, and the place is counted a tirtha for the release of the forefathers. Sambandar’s padigam calls it the place of the Lord who rides the bull, ash on his body, with his Devi as half of him. Inside are shrines to Vinayaka, Murugan, Bhairava, Surya, Chandra, Shani and Durga.
