01Kotpuli and Sundarar
Kotpuli Nayanar, one of the sixty-three, stored paddy for the temple’s offerings and punished his own kin when they ate it in a famine; the Periya Puranam tells his life. When Sundarar came, Kotpuli offered his daughters Singadi and Vanappagai to serve him, and Sundarar instead took them as daughters; in his hymns he calls himself Singadi Appan, father of Singadi. The temple’s katha says that when Sundarar arrived the Lord and the Devi had gone to the fields as farmers planting seedlings, and Vinayaka pointed the way; a Kaikatti Vinayaka, the Ganesha who points, stands outside.
