Kozhundeeswarar Temple, Kottur

Kottur, on the Mannargudi–Thiruthuraipoondi road, keeps a west-facing linga and a Devi whose name means she of honeyed speech. Sambandar sang it.

01Airavata’s shrine

The old name of the shrine is Airavatesvaram, for the katha says Indra’s white elephant Airavata worshipped here, and the apsara Rambha too. Kozhundeeswarar faces west under the vanni tree. Thenambal stands in her own east-facing shrine, holding rudraksha and lotus in her upper hands and showing the abhaya mudra with her right. Nine tirthas are counted, the Mulli river among them. Sambandar’s padigam made Kottur the 111th Tevaram shrine south of the Kaveri.
