Kai is the hand. Indra shaped a linga of sand here, and when he lifted it the print of his hand stayed on it. Sambandar sang the shrine.

01Indra’s handprint

The temple’s katha says Indra, cursed by the sage Gautama, made a linga of sand here to worship, and as he tried to move it his palm sank into it; the mark is shown on the Lord to this day. Agastya too is said to have been freed here from a grave sin. The temple has an Ardhanarishvara shrine and a Dakshinamurthy seated on the bull. Thirukkarthigai and Mahashivaratri are its great days. The temple is one of those in the care of the Madurai Adheenam.
