01The amla grove

Amalaka in Sanskrit, nelli in Tamil: the Lord is named for the tree, which is still the sthala tree. The katha says Shiva calmed the anger of Durvasa here, and that Parvati took birth as the daughter of a Chola king and was wedded to Shiva in this grove. Brahma, Vishnu, Surya, Chandra and Shani are named among the worshippers, and five tirthas are counted, one of them for the curing of illness. Sambandar sang one padigam on Tirunellikka, the 117th Tevaram shrine south of the Kaveri.
