A night attack on the rear of the French battery won the day, and the French and Raza Sahib’s men fled, leaving their guns.
01Ambush in the grove
Early in 1752 Raza Sahib and the French raided close to Madras, burning villages near the Company’s garden houses. Clive marched out after them and on a February evening came up the road near Kaveripakkam, west of Kanchipuram. The enemy had placed guns in a mango grove beside the road and opened fire as his column came level. Clive’s men took cover in a dry watercourse, and for hours the fight went badly for them.
02The turn in the dark
Clive sent a sergeant to scout the grove and learned that its rear was unguarded. He sent a party round in the dark, who came up behind the French gunners and fired a volley into them at close range. The French broke and Raza Sahib’s army fled after them, abandoning the guns. Clive then marched south and razed the town that Dupleix had begun to build to mark his victories.
Kaveripak ended the French threat to Madras and freed the Company to send Lawrence and Clive south to relieve Trichinopoly.
