Vijayaraghava Perumal Temple, Thiruputkuzhi

Here Shri Rama performed the last rites of Jatayu, the vulture king who fell fighting Ravana. Pul is a bird, kuzhi a pit: the name of the village is the grave of Jatayu.

01Jatayu’s rites

The Ramayana tells how Jatayu flew at Ravana’s chariot to save Sita, lost his wings to Ravana’s sword, and lived only long enough to tell Rama which way she had been taken. Rama honoured him as a father. Here the sanctum shows that moment: Vijayaraghava sits with four arms performing the rites, and Sridevi and Bhudevi have changed places, Sridevi on his left, both with lowered faces, in grief. The tank where Jatayu fell is Jatayu Tirtham.

02Where Ramanuja studied

Thirumangai Alvar sang Thiruputkuzhi in two pasurams. The village is remembered as the home of Yadava Prakasa, under whom the young Ramanuja first studied Vedanta before their ways parted, and Ramanuja has his own shrine here. Vedanta Desika also praised the Lord of this place. Worship follows the Pancharatra Agama. The Brahmotsavam is held in Masi and the float festival in Thai.
