Result

Bahlul Lodi defeated the Sharqi army at Narela and the siege of Delhi was lifted.

01The siege and the battle

Bahlul Lodi took Delhi from the last Sayyid in 1451. The Sharqis of Jaunpur, who had their own claim to the Delhi throne, struck at once. Mahmud Shah Sharqi besieged the city while Bahlul was in the Punjab. Bahlul returned with a small army, and at Narela he met the Sharqi force under Fath Khan Harawi. Fath Khan was killed and his army routed, and Mahmud Shah raised the siege.

02Delhi against Jaunpur

Narela opened a war of nearly thirty years between Delhi and Jaunpur. Jaunpur, a city of mosques and learning under the Sharqis, was finally taken by Bahlul in 1479, and Husain Shah Sharqi fled to Bengal. The Lodis then ruled the whole Ganga plain from Delhi to Bihar. Two generations later Ibrahim Lodi would lose it all to Babur at Panipat in 1526. Narela itself is now a suburb on Delhi’s northern edge.

Why it matters

It saved Bahlul Lodi’s new throne and began the Lodi–Sharqi war for the Ganga plain.
