After eight months the fort was entered through a gate opened by a bribed officer; Abul Hasan was taken and Golconda annexed.
01Madanna and Akkanna
Under Abul Hasan Qutb Shah, called Tana Shah, the government of Golconda was run by two Brahmin brothers, Madanna and Akkanna, who made alliance with Shivaji and sent help to Bijapur. Aurangzeb counted this among his reasons for war. In 1686 the brothers were murdered by Golconda nobles hoping to please the Mughals. It did not save the kingdom. In January 1687 Aurangzeb laid siege to Golconda fort on its granite hill outside Hyderabad.
02The open gate
The siege went badly for the Mughals. Rains and famine struck the camp, and in June mines dug under the walls blew back on the besiegers. Aurangzeb then turned to bribery. On the night of 21 September 1687 an Afghan officer, Abdullah Khan Pani, opened a postern gate. The Mughals poured in. Abdur Razzaq Lari, who refused every bribe, fought until he fell with many wounds; Aurangzeb later had him cared for. Abul Hasan was captured and spent his last years a prisoner at Daulatabad.
With Golconda gone, the whole Deccan except the Maratha country was Mughal; Sambhaji was captured two years later, but the Marathas fought on.
