Bijapur surrendered on 12 September 1686 and the Adil Shahi kingdom was annexed.
01A city under siege
Aurangzeb had come to the Deccan in 1681 to destroy Sambhaji, but turned first on Bijapur and Golconda, which had helped the Marathas. Prince Azam opened the siege of Bijapur in April 1686. The city walls ran for miles and were strong, and the Bijapur troops and the Marathas cut the Mughal supply lines. Famine came to the besiegers’ camp too. In July Aurangzeb arrived in person to drive the siege on.
02The end of the Adil Shahis
The Mughals filled the moat and pushed their batteries to the walls. Inside, food ran out and the nobles quarrelled. On 12 September 1686 Sikandar Adil Shah, eighteen years old, surrendered and came before Aurangzeb, who gave him a title and kept him a prisoner until his death in 1700. The dynasty founded by Yusuf Adil Khan in 1490 was ended. The city that had built the Gol Gumbaz declined quickly under Mughal rule.
The fall of Bijapur, followed by Golconda a year later, removed the buffers between the Mughals and the Marathas and began the last and longest phase of the Mughal–Maratha war.
