The Aphsad inscription of Kumaragupta’s descendant claims he churned the ocean of Ishanavarman’s army; other evidence suggests the Maukharis came out stronger.
01The Aphsad claim
The Aphsad stone inscription of Adityasena, set up near Gaya a century later, gives the family history. Of Kumaragupta it says that, like Mandara churning the milk ocean, he churned the dreadful sea of Ishanavarman’s army, the moon among kings, and won Lakshmi from it. The next verse says that he went to Prayaga and, as a hero, entered a fire of dried cow-dung cakes, as if into water, and gave up his life. Self-immolation at the sangam was an honoured end in that age.
02Reading the outcome
Historians are divided. A real victory would sit oddly with a king ending his life soon after, and the Maukharis went on to hold Kanyakubja and much of the Gangetic plain, while the Later Guptas lost ground in the following generation. Others take the claim at face value and read Prayaga as a peaceful end. The record is a family prashasti, so the safest reading is a hard-fought war whose winner is not established.

It opened three generations of war between the Later Guptas and Maukharis for the Gupta legacy in the Ganga valley.
