01Hanuman at rest
Few Hanuman murtis lie down. Here he reclines, some six metres long and red with sindoor. Prayagraj tradition says he rested at this spot, tired, on his return from Lanka. The shrine is sunk below the level of the road, and every monsoon the Ganga, swelling at the Sangam, enters it and touches the murti; the city counts that as a good omen for the year, and the priests move the worship up until the water falls.
02At every Magh Mela
The temple lies on the Sangam road beside the Akbar-era fort, so every pilgrim to the Magh Mela, Ardh Kumbh and Kumbh passes it, and the custom is that a Sangam snan is completed by darshan of Bade Hanuman ji. The shrine is managed by the mahants of the Baghambari Gaddi math. For the Mahakumbh of 2025 a corridor was built around it to handle the crowds.
