Result

Tipu’s army was driven from its position and the Company’s march on Srirangapatna went on unchecked.

01The road to the capital

Harris crossed into Mysore from the east in March 1799 with a large Company army and the Nizam’s troops, Wellesley commanding the Hyderabad contingent. A second army was coming up from the Malabar side. Tipu had just failed against that western column at Sedaseer, and he turned back to block Harris on rising ground near Malavalli, where the road to Srirangapatna ran.

02The ridge is cleared

On 27 March Tipu’s guns opened from the ridge and his infantry came forward. Wellesley’s 33rd Regiment met a Mysorean column with a volley and a bayonet charge, and the cavalry under General Floyd broke the rest. Tipu drew off in order, his guns saved, but he could not stand again in the open. Harris then swung south to cross the Kaveri at Sosale, a ford Tipu had not expected, and reached Srirangapatna on 5 April.

Why it matters

Malavalli opened the way to the siege in which Srirangapatna was stormed and Tipu killed on 4 May 1799.
