The Gwalior army was beaten after stubborn fighting round its guns; by the Treaty of Gwalior the state’s army was cut down and a Company-controlled force was kept in its place.
01Why the Company marched
Jankoji Rao Scindia died in February 1843 without a son, and a boy of the family was adopted as Jayajirao. The regency was fought over, and the minister favoured by the British was driven out. The Gwalior army was large and well gunned, trained in the old Maratha manner by European officers. Ellenborough, with Punjab in turmoil after Ranjit Singh’s death, would not leave such an army beside his line, and ordered two columns across the Chambal.
02The fight at Maharajpur
Gough expected to find the Marathas at Chonda, but they had moved forward in the night to Maharajpur. His columns ran into their batteries with the baggage still on the road. The Gwalior gunners stood by their pieces and many were killed at them; the infantry fought from house to house in the village. Gough took the position with his bayonets and paid heavily for it. The treaty that followed left the Scindia throne with Jayajirao but placed the state firmly under British control.
Maharajpur ended the independent military power of the Scindias; the Company star given for it is called the Gwalior Star.
