Dhanaji Jadhav went over to Shahu, Tarabai’s army broke up, and Shahu was crowned at Satara in January 1708.
01The heir returns
Shahu, son of Sambhaji, had been taken with his mother when Raigad fell in 1689, and grew up in Aurangzeb’s camp. Released in 1707, he crossed the Narmada and called on the Maratha chiefs to accept him as Shivaji’s rightful heir. Tarabai, who had led the war against the Mughals since 1700, declared that the kingdom had been won by her husband Rajaram and belonged to her son Shivaji II. Both sides gathered armies, and they met at Khed on the Bhima.
02Dhanaji changes sides
Tarabai sent her senapati Dhanaji Jadhav to stop Shahu. Shahu’s agents, among them the Brahmin clerk Balaji Vishwanath in Dhanaji’s service, persuaded the old general that Shahu was the true heir. When the armies met in October 1707, Dhanaji held back and then joined Shahu; Tarabai’s commander Parshuram Trimbak was left to be beaten. Shahu marched to Satara and was crowned in January 1708. Tarabai withdrew to Kolhapur, where her line ruled a separate state.

Khed made Shahu Chhatrapati and brought Balaji Vishwanath forward; he became the first Peshwa of the line that led the Maratha expansion of the 18th century.
