Abdullah Khan was defeated and captured; the rule of the Sayyid brothers ended.
01The king-makers fall
The Sayyids had raised Muhammad Shah to the throne in 1719 as a young puppet. In October 1720, while the emperor and Husain Ali Khan were marching south against the Nizam, a group of Turani nobles had Husain Ali stabbed to death near Toda Bhim. Muhammad Shah turned back towards Delhi. Abdullah Khan, in Delhi, proclaimed another prince, Muhammad Ibrahim, as emperor, raised money and troops quickly, and marched out to fight.
02Two days at Hasanpur
The armies met at Hasanpur on 13 November 1720. The emperor’s artillery under Haidar Quli Khan did heavy damage, and many of Abdullah Khan’s hastily raised troops melted away. The fighting went on into the next day. Abdullah Khan, wounded, was captured on his elephant and brought before Muhammad Shah. He was kept a prisoner and died, poisoned it was said, in 1722. Muhammad Shah entered Delhi as emperor in fact, though real power soon passed to new factions.
Hasanpur ended the age of the Sayyid king-makers and opened Muhammad Shah’s long reign, during which the Marathas spread across the north.
