The Moamorias were beaten and driven from Rangpur; Bharath Singha, wounded, fled the field.
01Rangpur retaken
The Moamoria rising had driven Swargadeo Gaurinath Singha from his capital, and rebel chiefs ruled Rangpur and the country around. After clearing Guwahati, Captain Welsh marched up the Brahmaputra and took Rangpur back in March 1794. The Moamorias regrouped under Bharath Singha, who had proclaimed himself Raja at Rangpur, and Sarbananda Singha of Bengmara sent men to help. They came against Welsh along the Dhai Ali, one of the raised roads the Ahom kings had built across the low, wet country.
02Seen from the Rang Ghar
Gaurinath watched the fight from the Rang Ghar, the royal pavilion beside his palace. The Belimarar Buranji of Visheswar Vaidyadhip remembers it as a terrible contest, with the smoke of the British guns darkening the sky and the dead lying like palm fruit after a storm. Bharath Singha lost a finger and fled with the remnant of his men. Welsh was recalled soon after by the Governor-General, and without him the king could not keep Rangpur for long.
It ended Welsh’s mission and taught the Ahom state to raise a paid standing army of sepoys.
