01Joymoti
In the troubled years of the Ahom court, when the boy king Sulikphaa, the Lora Raja, was having princes of the royal line maimed to remove rivals, the prince Gadapani fled to the Naga hills. His wife Joymoti was seized and tortured to make her tell where he was hiding. She would not, and died after days of torment at Jerenga Pathar in 1680. Gadapani returned to take the throne as Gadadhar Singha, and their son Rudra Singha, one of the greatest Ahom kings, dug this tank and built the temples in her memory. Assam remembers her as Sati Joymoti.
02Joydol and its companions
The Joysagar tank was dug in 1697, and the Joydol, a Vishnu temple of brick and stone with an octagonal hall, rose on its bank in 1698. Its walls carry figures of the avatars and scenes of court life, sports and hunting. Beside it stand a Shiva doul, the Devi Ghar and the Ghanashyam house. The water of the tank spreads over more than a hundred hectares, and the temples are protected monuments.
