Result

After the guns had been dragged up the hill and a breach made, the fortress was stormed on 19 October 1791.

01The rock above the plain

Nandidurga is a granite hill rising sharply out of the plain north of Bangalore, with the old temple of Bhoga Nandishwara at its foot. Haidar Ali and Tipu had strengthened its walls, and it guarded the roads from the north and east by which the Nizam’s allies and the Company’s convoys came. After the failure of the first advance on Srirangapatna in May 1791, Cornwallis spent the autumn taking such places one by one.

02Guns up the hill

Only one side of the rock could be approached. Working parties cut a road and hauled the battering guns up the slope by hand, under fire from the walls above. Once the breach was made, the storming column went in on 19 October 1791 and carried the fort. With Nandidurga gone, the country between Bangalore and the eastern passes was open to the Company and its allies, and convoys from the Carnatic could reach the army without a fight on the way.

Why it matters

With Savandurga in December, it showed that Tipu’s hill-forts could be taken, and freed the supply roads for the 1792 campaign.
