Result

Scindia’s infantry and guns beat the Jaipur army, and Jaipur paid tribute again.

01Tribute again

Jaipur had beaten Mahadji Scindia at Lalsot in 1787, lost to him at Patan in 1790, and kept falling behind on the tribute it owed. In 1800 Daulatrao Scindia sent Lakwa Dada into the state with several of the brigades raised by de Boigne and now under Perron’s officers. Sawai Pratap Singh called out his thakurs, and horsemen from Jodhpur rode to join him.

02Horse against the square

At Malpura the Rathore cavalry made a famous charge that rode over part of Scindia’s line and cut down the gunners. But the infantry battalions formed, held, and turned their fire on the horsemen as they came back. The Jaipur foot and guns were then driven off the field. The Maharaja agreed to pay, and Scindia’s demands on Rajputana grew heavier through the next years.

Why it matters

Malpura was the last great stand of the Rajput horse against the Maratha brigades, three years before those brigades were themselves broken by Lake at Laswari.
