The frontal attacks on the Hilli defences cost the attackers heavily; the position was finally outflanked and Hilli taken in December.
01The waist of the north
Hilli sits where the Indian border bulges into Dinajpur, only a short distance from the road to Bogra and Gaibandha. Taking it would cut the Pakistani forces in the north in two. The Pakistani 205 Brigade had fortified the villages around it, Morapara, Basudebpur and Naopara, with bunkers, mines and wire. The 4th Guards and other battalions of 20 Mountain Division attacked on the night of 22–23 November, before war was formally declared, and fought for two days in the bunker lines without breaking them.
02The second battle
When full war began on 3 December, Lachhman Singh sent his main force round the Hilli position toward Pirganj and Bogra and left Hilli itself under pressure. The cut-off garrison was attacked again on 10–11 December and the town fell. Lance Naik Albert Ekka’s Param Vir Chakra was won elsewhere, at Gangasagar, but the Brigade of the Guards counts Hilli among its battle honours. Bogra was taken just before the surrender at Dhaka on 16 December.
Hilli taught the eastern command to bypass strong points rather than batter them, the method that carried the Indian Army to Dhaka in thirteen days.
