Result

The Kahlur attack on Anandpur was beaten back with loss.

01An old quarrel

Anandpur, where Guru Gobind Singh created the Khalsa in 1699, lay at the foot of the Kahlur hills, and its rajas had fought the Guru for it until he left in 1704. In Ranjit Singh’s time the town was held by the Sodhis, descendants of the Gurus’ family. In 1812 Raja Mahan Chand of Kahlur claimed tribute from Sodhi Surjan Singh, who refused, and the raja sent his army against the town.

02The vaar of Anandpur

The fullest account is a Punjabi ballad, Anandpur di Var, by a poet named Ram Singh. It tells that the Sikh commander Hukma Singh Chimni, camped nearby, hurried to the town and that the Kahlur force was beaten and driven off with heavy loss. The poet names Bhai Sukha Singh, author of Gurbilas Patshahi Dasvin, and the jathedar of Kesgarh among the defenders. The ballad adds that Kahlur ended up paying the Sikhs instead.

Why it matters

It was the last attack on Anandpur by the hill rajas; three years later the British drove the Gorkhas from these hills and the Sutlej states came under their protection.
