Sikandar Shah was routed and fled to the Siwalik hills; Humayun entered Delhi a month later.
01Sikandar comes on
When news came of Machhiwara, Sikandar Shah Sur marched from the east with the main Afghan army and dug in facing the Mughals at Sirhind. Humayun joined his officers there. Abul Fazl, writing for Akbar, gives the twelve-year-old prince a share of the command, and the victory was announced in his name as well as his father’s. For some weeks the armies skirmished across the plain. Many Afghan chiefs, divided among the rival Sur claimants, held aloof.
02Delhi regained
On 22 June 1555 the Mughals attacked in force. Bairam Khan’s division bore the brunt, and the Afghans gave way. Sikandar fled north into the Siwaliks, where Akbar’s officers would besiege him at Mankot in 1557. Humayun entered Delhi on 23 July, fifteen years after Kannauj. He had only six months to enjoy it: in January 1556 he fell on the stairs of his library and died, and the Afghans under Hemu rose again.
Sirhind restored the Mughal dynasty in India; Hemu’s challenge in 1556 and Second Panipat decided whether it would stay.
