Result

The Sikh attack on the Afghan outposts was beaten back when Abdali’s main army came up, and the Sikhs fell back towards Amritsar.

01The seventh invasion

In 1764 the Sikh misls had taken Sirhind and were collecting tribute across the Punjab. Abdali came down from Kabul late that year, and this time he called on Mir Nasir Khan of Kalat, who joined him with Baloch troops as a religious duty. The Qazi Nur Muhammad, who rode with Nasir Khan, wrote the campaign up in Persian verse, the Jangnama, and his account is the fullest record of the fighting.

02The fight at the outposts

Charat Singh’s men fell on the Afghan picket at Qarawal and killed one of its commanders. Reinforcements came up, Nasir Khan fought in the front rank, and by nightfall the Sikhs had broken off and ridden away. Abdali went on to Amritsar on 1 December 1764. There Baba Gurbaksh Singh and some thirty Nihangs stood at the Harmandir Sahib and fell to the last man, and the Afghans blew up the shrine.

Why it matters

Abdali won the skirmishes of his seventh invasion but held nothing; within months of his return to Kabul the misls had taken Lahore.
