The Darbhanga forces beat back the Nawab’s army sent to force tribute from Mithila.
01A demand for tribute
Ten years of Maratha raids had drained Bengal’s treasury, and Alivardi Khan turned to the zamindars of Bihar to make up the loss. In 1753 he demanded tribute from Maharaja Narendra Singh of the Khandavala house of Darbhanga, the Maithil Brahmin family that held much of Mithila. Narendra Singh refused. Alivardi sent an officer, Bhikhari Mahtha, with an army to bring him to terms.
02The fight at the ghat
The armies met at Kandarpi Ghat in early October 1753. Bhikhari Mahtha had the better of the opening, but the Darbhanga men rallied and drove the Nawab’s force from the field. Narendra Singh kept his lands without paying the tribute demanded. The fight passed into Maithili song as the Kandarpi Ghat Larai, a ballad still remembered in the villages of north Bihar.
Kandarpi Ghat kept the Darbhanga Raj in being as the leading Hindu house of Mithila, a place it held until 1947.
