Result

The Delhi army routed the Mongols near Jalandhar.

01The invasion

Duwa Khan, ruler of the Chagatai realm in Central Asia, sent an army under Kadar into India. It crossed the Indus and the Jhelum and burned the suburbs of Kasur. Alauddin, who had been on the throne less than two years, sent his brother Ulugh Khan and the general Zafar Khan. Barani and Amir Khusrau both record that they met the Mongols near Jalandhar in February 1298 and won a clear victory, with many Mongols killed or captured.

02A decade of Mongol wars

Jalandhar opened a decade in which the Mongols came again and again: to Siwistan in 1298, to Kili outside Delhi in 1299, to Delhi itself in 1303, to Amroha in 1305 and the Ravi in 1306. The Delhi Sultanate beat back every major invasion. Whatever its record toward its Hindu subjects, the Sultanate army in these years stood between the Punjab and the fate that Persia and Iraq had suffered under the Mongols.

Why it matters

It was the first of Alauddin’s victories over the Mongols, which kept north India out of the Mongol empire.
