The Mysore field army was scattered on 29 December and the fort of Shimoga surrendered on 3 January 1792, with Reza Sahib among the captured.
01Into the Malnad
After Dharwar, Parashuram Bhau set out to recover the lands Haidar Ali had taken from the Marathas in the 1770s. In December 1791 he crossed the Tungabhadra, took Hooly Honnur, and pressed on to Shimoga, a fort on the Tunga at the edge of the wooded Malnad. Reza Sahib, a relation of Tipu, waited near the town with a field army to cover it.
02Battle in the jungle, then the fort
On 29 December Little’s battalions, with Maratha horse behind them, attacked Reza Sahib’s position in broken, wooded country. The Mysore army was driven off and lost its guns. Shimoga fort was then breached and, on 3 January 1792, surrendered. Reza Sahib was taken. Parashuram Bhau went on toward Bednur, but news of the peace talks at Srirangapatna called him back before he could take it.
Shimoga was the deepest Maratha thrust into Mysore during the war.
