Result

Daud’s army was destroyed; he was captured and put to death, ending the Karrani dynasty, and Bengal became a Mughal province.

01The gate of Bengal

When Munim Khan died in 1575, Daud broke the Treaty of Katak and swept back into Bengal. He fortified himself at Rajmahal, where the Rajmahal hills come down close to the Ganga and the road into Bengal passes through a narrow strip. Akbar sent Khan Jahan Husain Quli Khan as governor, with Todar Mal. For months the armies faced each other across the entrenchments, until reinforcements from Bihar reached the Mughals.

02The end of the Karranis

On 12 July 1576 the Mughals attacked. Daud’s uncle Junaid was killed by a cannon shot, the Afghan army broke, and Daud’s horse stuck in the mud as he fled. He was taken to Khan Jahan, who had him beheaded and sent the head to Akbar. The Karrani dynasty ended. Bengal was made a Mughal province, though the Afghan chiefs and the Bara Bhuiyans of eastern Bengal resisted for another thirty-five years.

Why it matters

Rajmahal ended independent Bengal; the long Mughal struggle with the Bara Bhuiyans followed.
