The Mughal force was ambushed in the pass and cut to pieces; Raja Birbal was among the dead.
01Into the hills
In 1585 Akbar moved his court to Attock to deal with the north-west. The Yusufzai Pashtuns of Swat and Buner raided the roads, and Akbar sent Zain Khan Koka against them. When he asked for help, Akbar sent two more commanders: Raja Birbal, the Brahmin wit and poet of his court, and the physician Hakim Abul Fath. Neither was a soldier. The three quarrelled over the route and decided to fall back through the hills.
02The ambush
In February 1586, as the army struggled through the Malandarai pass, the Yusufzai attacked from the heights on all sides. The column broke into a crowd of men, horses and baggage, and was destroyed in the narrow defile. Birbal was killed and his body was never found. Zain Khan and Abul Fath escaped. Badauni and Abul Fazl both record that Akbar mourned Birbal bitterly and refused food for two days. Raja Todar Mal and Raja Man Singh were sent to restore order on the frontier.
Malandarai was the heaviest Mughal loss of Akbar’s reign; the Yusufzai hills were never fully subdued.
