The Ahoms took and sacked Dimapur; the Dimasa kings moved their capital south to Maibang.
01Suhungmung’s wars
Suhungmung, the Dihingia Raja, was the Ahom king who took the Hindu title Svarganarayan and made the kingdom a power in the whole valley. He annexed the Chutia kingdom in 1523–24 and beat Turbak’s Bengal army in the 1530s. The Dimasa, whose kingdom lay on the Dhansiri and the Kapili, were his western neighbours. The Buranjis record years of fighting on the Dhansiri before the Ahoms reached Dimapur in 1536.
02The fall of the city
The Ahom army took Dimapur and its king was killed in the fighting. The city was sacked and left. Its ruins still stand in Dimapur town: a brick gateway and a field of carved stone pillars with rounded tops, some of the most striking monuments of the North-East. The Dimasa kings rebuilt their kingdom further south, first at Maibang in the North Cachar hills and later at Khaspur in the Barak valley.
The fall of Dimapur pushed the Dimasa kingdom south and carried Ahom rule to the Dhansiri, the shape the kingdom kept for two centuries.
