The chapter in brief Shri Bhagwan now speaks of Himself directly, promising Arjuna knowledge with its realisation, after which nothing remains to be known. Among thousands, hardly one strives for perfection, and among those, hardly one knows Him as He is. He names His two natures: the lower, eightfold prakriti of earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect and ego, and the higher, the life-principle that upholds the world. All beings spring from these; He is the source and dissolution of everything, and all is strung on Him like pearls on a thread. He is the taste in water, the light of sun and moon, Om in the Vedas. His divine maya of the three gunas is hard to cross, but those who take refuge in Him cross it. Four kinds of virtuous people worship Him: the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth and the wise. Rarest is the mahatma who, after many births, knows that Vasudeva is all. Even boons sought from other devatas are granted by Him alone.
Shri Bhagavan said श्रीभगवानुवाच
mayyāsaktamanāḥ pārtha yogaṃ yuñjanmadāśrayaḥ | asaṃśayaṃ samagraṃ māṃ yathā jñāsyasi tacchṛṇu
Partha, with your mind fixed on Me, practising yoga and taking refuge in Me, hear how you will know Me fully and without any doubt.
jñānaṃ te'haṃ savijñānamidaṃ vakṣyāmyaśeṣataḥ | yajjñātvā neha bhūyo'nyajjñātavyamavaśiṣyate
I shall tell you this knowledge in full, together with its realisation. Once you know it, nothing further remains here to be known.
manuṣyāṇāṃ sahasreṣu kaścidyatati siddhaye | yatatāmapi siddhānāṃ kaścinmāṃ vetti tattvataḥ
Among thousands of people, hardly one strives for perfection. And among those who strive and succeed, hardly one knows Me as I am, in truth.
bhūmirāpo'nalo vāyuḥ khaṃ mano buddhireva ca | ahaṃkāra itīyaṃ me bhinnā prakṛtiraṣṭadhā
Earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect and ego: this is My prakriti, divided eightfold.
apareyamitastvanyāṃ prakṛtiṃ viddhi me parām | jīvabhūtāṃ mahābāho yayedaṃ dhāryate jagat
This is the lower nature. But know, mighty-armed one, that beyond it is My higher nature, the very life of beings, by which this world is upheld.
etadyonīni bhūtāni sarvāṇītyupadhāraya | ahaṃ kṛtsnasya jagataḥ prabhavaḥ pralayastathā
Understand that all beings have these two as their womb. I am the origin of the whole world, and its dissolution as well.
mattaḥ parataraṃ nānyatkiṃcidasti dhanaṃjaya | mayi sarvamidaṃ protaṃ sūtre maṇigaṇā iva
Dhananjaya, there is nothing whatever higher than Me. All this is strung on Me, like rows of pearls on a thread.
raso'hamapsu kaunteya prabhāsmi śaśisūryayoḥ | praṇavaḥ sarvavedeṣu śabdaḥ khe pauruṣaṃ nṛṣu
Kaunteya, I am the taste in water, the light in the moon and the sun, Om in all the Vedas, the sound in space and the manhood in men.
puṇyo gandhaḥ pṛthivyāṃ ca tejaścāsmi vibhāvasau | jīvanaṃ sarvabhūteṣu tapaścāsmi tapasviṣu
I am the pure fragrance of the earth and the brilliance in fire. I am the life in all beings, and the tapas of those who practise austerity.
bījaṃ māṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ viddhi pārtha sanātanam | buddhirbuddhimatāmasmi tejastejasvināmaham
Partha, know Me as the eternal seed of all beings. I am the intelligence of the intelligent and the splendour of the splendid.
balaṃ balavatāṃ cāhaṃ kāmarāgavivarjitam | dharmāviruddho bhūteṣu kāmo'smi bharatarṣabha
Of the strong, I am the strength that is free of craving and attachment. In beings, best of the Bharatas, I am the desire that does not go against dharma.
ye caiva sāttvikā bhāvā rājasāstāmasāśca ye | matta eveti tānviddhi na tvahaṃ teṣu te mayi
Whatever states of being there are, sattvic, rajasic or tamasic, know that they come from Me alone. Yet I am not in them; they are in Me.
tribhirguṇamayairbhāvairebhiḥ sarvamidaṃ jagat | mohitaṃ nābhijānāti māmebhyaḥ paramavyayam
Deluded by these states made of the three gunas, the whole world does not recognise Me, who am beyond them and imperishable.
daivī hyeṣā guṇamayī mama māyā duratyayā | māmeva ye prapadyante māyāmetāṃ taranti te
This divine maya of Mine, made of the gunas, is hard to cross. But those who take refuge in Me alone cross over this maya.
na māṃ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ | māyayāpahṛtajñānā āsuraṃ bhāvamāśritāḥ
Evildoers, the deluded and the lowest of men do not take refuge in Me. Their knowledge is stolen away by maya, and they cling to an asuric nature.
caturvidhā bhajante māṃ janāḥ sukṛtino'rjuna | ārto jijñāsurarthārthī jñānī ca bharatarṣabha
Arjuna, four kinds of virtuous people worship Me, best of the Bharatas: the one in distress, the one who seeks to know, the one who seeks wealth, and the one who knows.
teṣāṃ jñānī nityayukta ekabhaktirviśiṣyate | priyo hi jñānino'tyarthamahaṃ sa ca mama priyaḥ
Of these, the wise one, ever steadfast and devoted to the One alone, stands highest. I am exceedingly dear to the wise, and he is dear to Me.
udārāḥ sarva evaite jñānī tvātmaiva me matam | āsthitaḥ sa hi yuktātmā māmevānuttamāṃ gatim
All of these are noble, but the wise one I hold to be My very Self. With his mind united in Me, he abides in Me alone, the highest goal.
bahūnāṃ janmanāmante jñānavānmāṃ prapadyate | vāsudevaḥ sarvamiti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ
At the end of many births, the one who has knowledge takes refuge in Me, knowing that Vasudeva is all. Such a mahatma is very hard to find.
kāmaistaistairhṛtajñānāḥ prapadyante'nyadevatāḥ | taṃ taṃ niyamamāsthāya prakṛtyā niyatāḥ svayā
Those whose knowledge is carried away by this desire or that turn to other devatas, following this rule or that, led by their own nature.
yo yo yāṃ yāṃ tanuṃ bhaktaḥ śraddhayārcitumicchati | tasya tasyācalāṃ śraddhāṃ tāmeva vidadhāmyaham
Whatever form a devotee wishes to worship with faith, in that very form I make his faith steady.
sa tayā śraddhayā yuktastasyārādhanamīhate | labhate ca tataḥ kāmānmayaiva vihitānhi tān
Endowed with that faith, he worships that form, and from it he gains his desires. Yet those desires are granted by Me alone.
antavattu phalaṃ teṣāṃ tadbhavatyalpamedhasām | devāndevayajo yānti madbhaktā yānti māmapi
But the fruit gained by those of small understanding comes to an end. Worshippers of the devatas go to the devatas; My devotees come to Me.
avyaktaṃ vyaktimāpannaṃ manyante māmabuddhayaḥ | paraṃ bhāvamajānanto mamāvyayamanuttamam
The undiscerning think of Me, the Unmanifest, as having merely come into manifest form. They do not know My higher being, imperishable and supreme.
nāhaṃ prakāśaḥ sarvasya yogamāyāsamāvṛtaḥ | mūḍho'yaṃ nābhijānāti loko māmajamavyayam
Veiled by My yogamaya, I am not revealed to all. This deluded world does not know Me, the unborn and imperishable.
vedāhaṃ samatītāni vartamānāni cārjuna | bhaviṣyāṇi ca bhūtāni māṃ tu veda na kaścana
Arjuna, I know the beings that have passed, those that are now, and those yet to come. But no one knows Me.
icchādveṣasamutthena dvandvamohena bhārata | sarvabhūtāni saṃmohaṃ sarge yānti parantapa
Bharata, scorcher of foes, all beings fall into delusion at birth, through the confusion of the pairs of opposites that arises from liking and aversion.
yeṣāṃ tvantagataṃ pāpaṃ janānāṃ puṇyakarmaṇām | te dvandvamohanirmuktā bhajante māṃ dṛḍhavratāḥ
But those of virtuous deeds whose sin has come to an end, freed from the delusion of opposites, worship Me with firm vows.
jarāmaraṇamokṣāya māmāśritya yatanti ye | te brahma tadviduḥ kṛtsnamadhyātmaṃ karma cākhilam
Those who take refuge in Me and strive for freedom from old age and death come to know Brahman, the whole of the adhyatma, and all of karma.
sādhibhūtādhidaivaṃ māṃ sādhiyajñaṃ ca ye viduḥ | prayāṇakāle'pi ca māṃ te viduryuktacetasaḥ
Those who know Me together with the adhibhuta, the adhidaiva and the adhiyajna, their minds united in Me, know Me even at the hour of departure.
