Arjuna asks which worshippers know yoga best: those devoted to Bhagwan in His form, or those who worship the imperishable, unmanifest Brahman. Shri Krishna answers that those who fix their minds on Him with supreme faith are the most united with Him. The seekers of the unmanifest also reach Him, but their path is harder, for embodied beings attain the formless only with great difficulty. For those who give all their actions to Him and meditate on Him alone, He is the one who lifts them quickly out of the ocean of death and samsara. Then He gives a ladder of practice: fix the mind on Him; if not, practise; if not, work for Him; if not, give up the fruits of action. Giving up the fruit brings peace at once. The chapter closes with the marks of the devotee dear to Him: free of hatred, friendly and compassionate, the same in honour and insult, content with whatever comes, steady in mind.
evaṃ satatayuktā ye bhaktāstvāṃ paryupāsate | ye cāpyakṣaramavyaktaṃ teṣāṃ ke yogavittamāḥ
There are devotees who, ever steadfast, worship You thus, and there are others who worship the Imperishable and Unmanifest. Which of these know yoga best?
ye tvakṣaramanirdeśyamavyaktaṃ paryupāsate | sarvatragamacintyaṃ ca kūṭasthamacalaṃ dhruvam
But those who worship the Imperishable, the indefinable, the unmanifest, the all-pervading and unthinkable, the changeless, the unmoving and the eternal,
śreyo hi jñānamabhyāsājjñānāddhyānaṃ viśiṣyate | dhyānātkarmaphalatyāgastyāgācchāntiranantaram
Knowledge is better than practice; meditation is higher than knowledge; giving up the fruit of action is higher than meditation, for peace follows that giving up at once.
yasmānnodvijate loko lokānnodvijate ca yaḥ | harṣāmarṣabhayodvegairmukto yaḥ sa ca me priyaḥ
He by whom the world is not troubled and who is not troubled by the world, who is free from elation, impatience, fear and agitation, he too is dear to Me.
anapekṣaḥ śucirdakṣa udāsīno gatavyathaḥ | sarvārambhaparityāgī yo madbhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ
He who wants nothing, who is pure and capable, unconcerned and untroubled, who has given up all self-driven undertakings: that devotee of Mine is dear to Me.
Who takes blame and praise alike, who is quiet, content with whatever comes, without a fixed home, steady of mind and full of devotion: that person is dear to Me.
ye tu dharmyāmṛtamidaṃ yathoktaṃ paryupāsate | śraddadhānā matparamā bhaktāste'tīva me priyāḥ
But those who, full of faith and holding Me as the highest, follow this immortal dharma as I have taught it, those devotees are exceedingly dear to Me.
