Arjuna says his delusion is gone and asks to see Bhagwan's divine form with his own eyes. Shri Krishna gives him divine sight, for no human eye can bear it. Sanjaya tells Dhritarashtra what Arjuna saw: a form with countless faces, eyes, arms and weapons, brighter than a thousand suns rising together, holding the whole universe in one place. Arjuna, his hair standing on end, sees Brahma on the lotus, the rishis and the devas within that body, and then sees the sons of Dhritarashtra, Bhishma, Drona and Karna rushing into its blazing mouths like moths into fire. Shaken, he asks who this is. Bhagwan answers, 'I am Time, the destroyer of worlds'; the warriors are already slain by Him, and Arjuna is only the instrument. Arjuna bows again and again, begs forgiveness for having treated Him as a friend, and asks to see the four-armed form. Bhagwan shows it, then His gentle human form, and declares that neither Vedas, yajna, charity nor tapas can win this vision. Only undivided bhakti can.
He wore divine garlands and garments and was anointed with divine fragrance. He was the God made of every wonder, endless, His face turned in every direction.
In Your body, O God, I see all the devas and the hosts of every kind of being; Brahma the Lord seated on the lotus, all the rishis and the divine serpents.
anekabāhūdaravaktranetraṃ paśyāmi tvāṃ sarvato'nantarūpam | nāntaṃ na madhyaṃ na punastavādiṃ paśyāmi viśveśvara viśvarūpa
I see You with countless arms, bellies, mouths and eyes, boundless in form on every side. Lord of the universe, whose form is the universe, I see in You no end, no middle and no beginning.
I see You crowned, bearing mace and discus, a mass of radiance shining on every side, hard to look upon, blazing like fire and sun, beyond all measure.
You are the Imperishable, the Supreme to be known. You are the final resting place of this universe. You are the undying guardian of eternal dharma. You are, I now know, the everlasting Purusha.
I see You without beginning, middle or end, of infinite power and infinite arms, the sun and moon Your eyes, Your mouth a blazing fire, scorching this universe with Your own radiance.
The space between heaven and earth and all the directions are filled by You alone. Seeing this wondrous and terrible form of Yours, O Mahatma, the three worlds tremble.
Hosts of devas enter into You; some, in fear, praise You with joined palms. Bands of great rishis and siddhas cry 'May all be well!' and praise You with hymns of every kind.
rudrādityā vasavo ye ca sādhyā viśve'śvinau marutaścoṣmapāśca | gandharvayakṣāsurasiddhasaṃghā vīkṣante tvāṃ vismitāścaiva sarve
The Rudras, Adityas, Vasus and Sadhyas, the Vishvedevas, the two Ashvins, the Maruts and the pitris, and the hosts of gandharvas, yakshas, asuras and siddhas all gaze at You in amazement.
Seeing Your vast form, mighty-armed one, with its many mouths and eyes, many arms, thighs and feet, many bellies and many terrible tusks, the worlds are shaken, and so am I.
nabhaḥspṛśaṃ dīptamanekavarṇaṃ vyāttānanaṃ dīptaviśālanetram | dṛṣṭvā hi tvāṃ pravyathitāntarātmā dhṛtiṃ na vindāmi śamaṃ ca viṣṇo
Seeing You touching the sky, ablaze with many colours, mouths wide open, great eyes flaming, my inmost self trembles, and I find neither courage nor peace, O Vishnu.
Seeing Your mouths, fearful with tusks and blazing like the fire at the end of time, I lose all sense of direction and find no refuge. Be gracious, Lord of the devas, refuge of the worlds.
All these sons of Dhritarashtra, with the hosts of kings, Bhishma, Drona and that son of a charioteer, Karna, together with the chief warriors on our side too,
Devouring all the worlds on every side with Your flaming mouths, You lick Your lips. Your fierce rays fill the whole universe with radiance and scorch it, O Vishnu.
ākhyāhi me ko bhavānugrarūpo namo'stu te devavara prasīda | vijñātumicchāmi bhavantamādyaṃ na hi prajānāmi tava pravṛttim
Tell me who You are in this fierce form. I bow to You, best of the devas; be gracious. I wish to know You, the Primal One, for I do not understand what You are doing.
I am Time, grown mighty, the destroyer of worlds, come forth here to gather up the worlds. Even without you, none of these warriors arrayed in the opposing ranks will survive.
Therefore rise up and win glory. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a flourishing kingdom. They have already been slain by Me. Be only the instrument, Savyasachin.
droṇaṃ ca bhīṣmaṃ ca jayadrathaṃ ca karṇaṃ tathānyānapi yodhavīrān | mayā hatāṃstvaṃ jahi mā vyathiṣṭhā yudhyasva jetāsi raṇe sapatnān
Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna and the other heroic warriors are already slain by Me. Slay them; do not be troubled. Fight, and you will conquer your foes in battle.
Hearing these words of Keshava, the crowned Arjuna, trembling, joined his palms and bowed. Overwhelmed with fear, he bowed again and spoke to Krishna in a choking voice.
sthāne hṛṣīkeśa tava prakīrtyā jagatprahṛṣyatyanurajyate ca | rakṣāṃsi bhītāni diśo dravanti sarve namasyanti ca siddhasaṃghāḥ
It is fitting, Hrishikesha, that the world rejoices and delights in praising You. The rakshasas flee in fear in every direction, and all the hosts of siddhas bow to You.
And why should they not bow to You, O Mahatma, greater even than Brahma, the first Creator? Infinite One, Lord of the devas, refuge of the worlds, You are the Imperishable: being and non-being, and That which is beyond both.
tvamādidevaḥ puruṣaḥ purāṇa- stvamasya viśvasya paraṃ nidhānam | vettāsi vedyaṃ ca paraṃ ca dhāma tvayā tataṃ viśvamanantarūpa
You are the first God, the ancient Purusha, the final resting place of this universe. You are the knower and the known, and the supreme abode. By You this universe is pervaded, O You of infinite form.
vāyuryamo'gnirvaruṇaḥ śaśāṅkaḥ prajāpatistvaṃ prapitāmahaśca | namo namaste'stu sahasrakṛtvaḥ punaśca bhūyo'pi namo namaste
You are Vayu, Yama, Agni, Varuna and the moon; You are Prajapati and the great-grandsire of all. Salutations to You a thousand times, and again and again, salutations to You.
namaḥ purastādatha pṛṣṭhataste namo'stu te sarvata eva sarva | anantavīryāmitavikramastvaṃ sarvaṃ samāpnoṣi tato'si sarvaḥ
Salutations to You in front and behind; salutations to You on every side, O All. Your strength is endless and Your might immeasurable. You pervade all, and so You are all.
sakheti matvā prasabhaṃ yaduktaṃ he kṛṣṇa he yādava he sakheti | ajānatā mahimānaṃ tavedaṃ mayā pramādātpraṇayena vāpi
Thinking of You as a friend, I rashly called out, 'O Krishna, O Yadava, O friend!', not knowing this greatness of Yours, through carelessness or through affection.
And whatever disrespect I showed You in jest, at play, at rest, while sitting or at meals, alone or before others, Achyuta, for all of it I beg forgiveness of You, the Immeasurable.
You are the father of this world, moving and unmoving, its object of worship and its most venerable guru. None is equal to You in the three worlds; how could anyone be greater, O You of matchless power?
So, laying my body down in prostration, I seek Your grace, Lord worthy of all praise. As a father bears with his son, a friend with his friend, a lover with the beloved, so please bear with me, O God.
adṛṣṭapūrvaṃ hṛṣito'smi dṛṣṭvā bhayena ca pravyathitaṃ mano me | tadeva me darśaya deva rūpaṃ prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa
Having seen what was never seen before, I am thrilled, yet my mind is shaken with fear. Show me that other form of Yours, O God. Be gracious, Lord of the devas, refuge of the worlds.
Arjuna, pleased with you, I have shown you by My own yoga power this supreme form, radiant, universal, infinite and primal, which no one but you has ever seen.
na vedayajñādhyayanairna dānai- rna ca kriyābhirna tapobhirugraiḥ | evaṃrūpaḥ śakya ahaṃ nṛloke draṣṭuṃ tvadanyena kurupravīra
Not by the Vedas, nor by yajna, nor by study, nor by charity, nor by rituals, nor by fierce austerities can I be seen in this form in the world of men by anyone but you, hero of the Kurus.
