The chapter in brief Arjuna asks how sannyasa differs from tyaga. Shri Krishna answers that yajna, dana and tapas must never be dropped, for they purify even the wise; what goes is attachment and the wish for fruit. Every action has five causes, the fifth being daiva, the unseen. One who sees the Self as the sole doer does not see rightly. Knowledge, action, doer, understanding, steadiness and happiness are each sorted by the gunas, and the duties of Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra are shown to rise from the gunas of one's own nature. Worshipping Bhagwan through one's own work, a person reaches perfection; one's own dharma, even done imperfectly, is better than another's done well. Bhagwan then gives His most secret word: fix your mind on Me, be My devotee, give up all dharmas and take refuge in Me alone; I shall free you from all sins, do not grieve. Arjuna's delusion is gone. Sanjaya, who heard it all by Vyasa's grace, ends: where Krishna and Partha stand, there are fortune, victory and prosperity.

saṃnyāsasya mahābāho tattvamicchāmi veditum | tyāgasya ca hṛṣīkeśa pṛthakkeśiniṣūdana
O mighty-armed Hrishikesha, slayer of Keshi, I wish to know the truth of sannyasa and of tyaga, each separately.
Shri Bhagavan said श्रीभगवानुवाच
kāmyānāṃ karmaṇāṃ nyāsaṃ saṃnyāsaṃ kavayo viduḥ | sarvakarmaphalatyāgaṃ prāhustyāgaṃ vicakṣaṇāḥ
The sages understand sannyasa as giving up actions done from desire; the discerning call the giving up of the fruit of all actions tyaga.
tyājyaṃ doṣavadityeke karma prāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ | yajñadānatapaḥkarma na tyājyamiti cāpare
Some thinkers say that action should be given up as an evil; others say that acts of yajna, charity and austerity should not be given up.
niścayaṃ śṛṇu me tatra tyāge bharatasattama | tyāgo hi puruṣavyāghra trividhaḥ saṃprakīrtitaḥ
Hear My conclusion about tyaga, O best of the Bharatas. Tyaga, O tiger among men, is declared to be of three kinds.
yajñadānatapaḥkarma na tyājyaṃ kāryameva tat | yajño dānaṃ tapaścaiva pāvanāni manīṣiṇām
Acts of yajna, charity and austerity should not be given up; they must be done. Yajna, charity and austerity purify even the wise.
etānyapi tu karmāṇi saṅgaṃ tyaktvā phalāni ca | kartavyānīti me pārtha niścitaṃ matamuttamam
But even these actions should be done giving up attachment and the fruits. This, O Partha, is My settled and highest view.
niyatasya tu saṃnyāsaḥ karmaṇo nopapadyate | mohāttasya parityāgastāmasaḥ parikīrtitaḥ
Renouncing an obligatory duty is not right. Giving it up out of delusion is declared tamasic.
duḥkhamityeva yatkarma kāyakleśabhayāttyajet | sa kṛtvā rājasaṃ tyāgaṃ naiva tyāgaphalaṃ labhet
One who gives up an action because it is painful, out of fear of bodily trouble, makes a rajasic renunciation and does not gain the fruit of renunciation.
kāryamityeva yatkarma niyataṃ kriyate'rjuna | saṅgaṃ tyaktvā phalaṃ caiva sa tyāgaḥ sāttviko mataḥ
When an obligatory action is done, O Arjuna, simply because it ought to be done, giving up attachment and fruit, that renunciation is held to be sattvic.
na dveṣṭyakuśalaṃ karma kuśale nānuṣajjate | tyāgī sattvasamāviṣṭo medhāvī chinnasaṃśayaḥ
The renouncer filled with sattva, wise and free of doubt, neither dislikes unpleasant work nor clings to pleasant work.
It is not possible for an embodied being to give up actions entirely; but one who gives up the fruit of action is called a true renouncer.
aniṣṭamiṣṭaṃ miśraṃ ca trividhaṃ karmaṇaḥ phalam | bhavatyatyāgināṃ pretya na tu saṃnyāsināṃ kvacit
The threefold fruit of action, unwanted, wanted and mixed, comes after death to those who have not renounced, but never to those who have.
pañcaitāni mahābāho kāraṇāni nibodha me | sāṃkhye kṛtānte proktāni siddhaye sarvakarmaṇām
Learn from Me, O mighty-armed, these five causes for the accomplishment of all actions, as stated in the Sankhya doctrine.
adhiṣṭhānaṃ tathā kartā karaṇaṃ ca pṛthagvidham | vividhāśca pṛthakceṣṭā daivaṃ caivātra pañcamam
The seat of action, the doer, the various instruments, the many separate efforts, and daiva, the unseen, as the fifth.
śarīravāṅmanobhiryatkarma prārabhate naraḥ | nyāyyaṃ vā viparītaṃ vā pañcaite tasya hetavaḥ
Whatever action a person begins with body, speech or mind, whether right or wrong, these five are its causes.
tatraivaṃ sati kartāramātmānaṃ kevalaṃ tu yaḥ | paśyatyakṛtabuddhitvānna sa paśyati durmatiḥ
This being so, one who, through an untrained understanding, sees the Self alone as the doer, that dull-minded person does not see.
One who has no sense of 'I am the doer' and whose understanding is not tainted, even if he slays these people, does not slay and is not bound.
jñānaṃ jñeyaṃ parijñātā trividhā karmacodanā | karaṇaṃ karma karteti trividhaḥ karmasaṃgrahaḥ
Knowledge, the object of knowledge and the knower are the threefold impulse to action; the instrument, the action and the doer are the threefold basis of action.
jñānaṃ karma ca kartā ca tridhaiva guṇabhedataḥ | procyate guṇasaṃkhyāne yathāvacchṛṇu tānyapi
Knowledge, action and doer are each said to be of three kinds in the teaching on the gunas, according to the difference of gunas. Hear of these too, as they are.
sarvabhūteṣu yenaikaṃ bhāvamavyayamīkṣate | avibhaktaṃ vibhakteṣu tajjñānaṃ viddhi sāttvikam
The knowledge by which one sees one imperishable reality in all beings, undivided in the divided, know that knowledge to be sattvic.
pṛthaktvena tu yajjñānaṃ nānābhāvānpṛthagvidhān | vetti sarveṣu bhūteṣu tajjñānaṃ viddhi rājasam
But the knowledge that sees in all beings many separate entities of different kinds, each apart from the other, know that knowledge to be rajasic.
yattu kṛtsnavadekasminkārye saktamahaitukam | atattvārthavadalpaṃ ca tattāmasamudāhṛtam
And that which clings to a single effect as if it were the whole, without reason, without grasp of the truth, and narrow, is declared tamasic.
niyataṃ saṅgarahitamarāgadveṣataḥ kṛtam | aphalaprepsunā karma yattatsāttvikamucyate
An obligatory action done without attachment, without love or hatred, by one who does not seek its fruit, is called sattvic.
yattu kāmepsunā karma sāhaṃkāreṇa vā punaḥ | kriyate bahulāyāsaṃ tadrājasamudāhṛtam
But action done by one who longs for desires, or with ego, and with great strain, is declared rajasic.
anubandhaṃ kṣayaṃ hiṃsāmanavekṣya ca pauruṣam | mohādārabhyate karma yattattāmasamucyate
Action begun out of delusion, without regard to consequences, loss, harm to others or one's own capacity, is called tamasic.
muktasaṅgo'nahaṃvādī dhṛtyutsāhasamanvitaḥ | siddhyasiddhyornirvikāraḥ kartā sāttvika ucyate
A doer free from attachment, not given to talk of himself, full of steadiness and zeal, unchanged by success or failure, is called sattvic.
rāgī karmaphalaprepsurlubdho hiṃsātmako'śuciḥ | harṣaśokānvitaḥ kartā rājasaḥ parikīrtitaḥ
A doer who is passionate, eager for the fruit of action, greedy, harmful by nature, impure, and swayed by joy and sorrow, is declared rajasic.
ayuktaḥ prākṛtaḥ stabdhaḥ śaṭho naiṣkṛtiko'lasaḥ | viṣādī dīrghasūtrī ca kartā tāmasa ucyate
A doer who is unsteady, coarse, stubborn, deceitful, spiteful, lazy, despondent and given to delay is called tamasic.
buddherbhedaṃ dhṛteścaiva guṇatastrividhaṃ śṛṇu | procyamānamaśeṣeṇa pṛthaktvena dhanaṃjaya
Now hear, O Dhananjaya, the threefold division of understanding and of steadiness according to the gunas, told fully and separately.
pravṛttiṃ ca nivṛttiṃ ca kāryākārye bhayābhaye | bandhaṃ mokṣaṃ ca yā vetti buddhiḥ sā pārtha sāttvikī
The understanding that knows engagement and withdrawal, what should and should not be done, what is to be feared and what not, what binds and what frees, that understanding, O Partha, is sattvic.
yayā dharmamadharmaṃ ca kāryaṃ cākāryameva ca | ayathāvatprajānāti buddhiḥ sā pārtha rājasī
The understanding by which one knows dharma and adharma, what should and should not be done, wrongly, that understanding, O Partha, is rajasic.
adharmaṃ dharmamiti yā manyate tamasāvṛtā | sarvārthānviparītāṃśca buddhiḥ sā pārtha tāmasī
The understanding that, covered by darkness, takes adharma to be dharma and sees all things in reverse, that understanding, O Partha, is tamasic.
dhṛtyā yayā dhārayate manaḥprāṇendriyakriyāḥ | yogenāvyabhicāriṇyā dhṛtiḥ sā pārtha sāttvikī
The unwavering steadiness by which, through yoga, one holds the workings of the mind, the prana and the senses, that steadiness, O Partha, is sattvic.
yayā tu dharmakāmārthāndhṛtyā dhārayate'rjuna | prasaṅgena phalākāṅkṣī dhṛtiḥ sā pārtha rājasī
But the steadiness by which one holds to dharma, pleasure and wealth, O Arjuna, desiring their fruits out of attachment, that steadiness, O Partha, is rajasic.
yayā svapnaṃ bhayaṃ śokaṃ viṣādaṃ madameva ca | na vimuñcati durmedhā dhṛtiḥ sā pārtha tāmasī
The steadiness by which a foolish person does not let go of sleep, fear, grief, despondency and arrogance, that steadiness, O Partha, is tamasic.
sukhaṃ tvidānīṃ trividhaṃ śṛṇu me bharatarṣabha | abhyāsādramate yatra duḥkhāntaṃ ca nigacchati
And now hear from Me, O bull among the Bharatas, of the three kinds of happiness: that in which one comes to delight through practice and reaches the end of sorrow,
yattadagre viṣamiva pariṇāme'mṛtopamam | tatsukhaṃ sāttvikaṃ proktamātmabuddhiprasādajam
Which is like poison at first and like amrita in the end, born of the clarity of one's own understanding of the Self: that happiness is called sattvic.
viṣayendriyasaṃyogādyattadagre'mṛtopamam | pariṇāme viṣamiva tatsukhaṃ rājasaṃ smṛtam
The happiness that comes from the contact of the senses with their objects, like amrita at first and like poison in the end, is held to be rajasic.
yadagre cānubandhe ca sukhaṃ mohanamātmanaḥ | nidrālasyapramādotthaṃ tattāmasamudāhṛtam
The happiness that deludes the self both at the beginning and in its outcome, arising from sleep, sloth and carelessness, is declared tamasic.
na tadasti pṛthivyāṃ vā divi deveṣu vā punaḥ | sattvaṃ prakṛtijairmuktaṃ yadebhiḥ syāttribhirguṇaiḥ
There is no being on earth, or in heaven among the Devas, that is free from these three gunas born of Prakriti.
brāhmaṇakṣatriyaviśāṃ śūdrāṇāṃ ca parantapa | karmāṇi pravibhaktāni svabhāvaprabhavairguṇaiḥ
The duties of Brahmanas, Kshatriyas and Vaishyas, and of Shudras too, O scorcher of foes, are divided according to the gunas that arise from their own nature.
śamo damastapaḥ śaucaṃ kṣāntirārjavameva ca | jñānaṃ vijñānamāstikyaṃ brahmakarma svabhāvajam
Calm, self-control, austerity, purity, forbearance, straightness, knowledge, realisation and faith in the Veda are the duties of a Brahmana, born of his nature.
śauryaṃ tejo dhṛtirdākṣyaṃ yuddhe cāpyapalāyanam | dānamīśvarabhāvaśca kṣātraṃ karma svabhāvajam
Valour, vigour, steadiness, skill, not fleeing from battle, generosity and lordliness are the duties of a Kshatriya, born of his nature.
kṛṣigaurakṣyavāṇijyaṃ vaiśyakarma svabhāvajam | paricaryātmakaṃ karma śūdrasyāpi svabhāvajam
Farming, protecting cattle and trade are the duties of a Vaishya, born of his nature; and work of service is the duty of a Shudra, born of his nature.
sve sve karmaṇyabhirataḥ saṃsiddhiṃ labhate naraḥ | svakarmanirataḥ siddhiṃ yathā vindati tacchṛṇu
Devoted each to his own duty, a person attains perfection. Hear how one devoted to his own duty finds perfection.
yataḥ pravṛttirbhūtānāṃ yena sarvamidaṃ tatam | svakarmaṇā tamabhyarcya siddhiṃ vindati mānavaḥ
By worshipping through one's own work Him from whom all beings come forth and by whom all this is pervaded, a person finds perfection.
śreyānsvadharmo viguṇaḥ paradharmātsvanuṣṭhitāt | svabhāvaniyataṃ karma kurvannāpnoti kilbiṣam
Better is one's own dharma, though lacking in merit, than the dharma of another well performed. Doing the work set by one's own nature, one incurs no sin.
sahajaṃ karma kaunteya sadoṣamapi na tyajet | sarvārambhā hi doṣeṇa dhūmenāgnirivāvṛtāḥ
One should not give up the work one is born to, O Kaunteya, even if it has some fault; for all undertakings are covered by fault, as fire is by smoke.
asaktabuddhiḥ sarvatra jitātmā vigataspṛhaḥ | naiṣkarmyasiddhiṃ paramāṃ saṃnyāsenādhigacchati
One whose understanding is unattached everywhere, who has mastered himself and is free from longing, reaches through renunciation the supreme perfection of freedom from action.
siddhiṃ prāpto yathā brahma tathāpnoti nibodha me | samāsenaiva kaunteya niṣṭhā jñānasya yā parā
Learn from Me in brief, O Kaunteya, how one who has gained perfection attains Brahman, the highest state of knowledge.
buddhyā viśuddhyā yukto dhṛtyātmānaṃ niyamya ca | śabdādīnviṣayāṃstyaktvā rāgadveṣau vyudasya ca
Endowed with a purified understanding, restraining the self with steadiness, leaving aside sound and the other sense objects, casting off attraction and aversion,
viviktasevī laghvāśī yatavākkāyamānasaḥ | dhyānayogaparo nityaṃ vairāgyaṃ samupāśritaḥ
Dwelling in solitude, eating lightly, with speech, body and mind controlled, always intent on the yoga of meditation, taking refuge in dispassion,
ahaṃkāraṃ balaṃ darpaṃ kāmaṃ krodhaṃ parigraham | vimucya nirmamaḥ śānto brahmabhūyāya kalpate
Having given up ego, force, arrogance, desire, anger and possessions, free from the sense of 'mine' and at peace, he becomes fit to be one with Brahman.
brahmabhūtaḥ prasannātmā na śocati na kāṅkṣati | samaḥ sarveṣu bhūteṣu madbhaktiṃ labhate parām
Having become one with Brahman, serene in spirit, he neither grieves nor craves. Equal towards all beings, he gains supreme devotion to Me.
bhaktyā māmabhijānāti yāvānyaścāsmi tattvataḥ | tato māṃ tattvato jñātvā viśate tadanantaram
By devotion he comes to know Me in truth, how great I am and who I am. Then, knowing Me in truth, he enters into Me at once.
sarvakarmāṇyapi sadā kurvāṇo madvyapāśrayaḥ | matprasādādavāpnoti śāśvataṃ padamavyayam
Though always doing all actions, one who takes refuge in Me reaches by My grace the eternal, imperishable abode.
cetasā sarvakarmāṇi mayi saṃnyasya matparaḥ | buddhiyogamupāśritya maccittaḥ satataṃ bhava
Offering all actions to Me in your heart, holding Me as the highest, resorting to the yoga of understanding, keep your mind always fixed on Me.
maccittaḥ sarvadurgāṇi matprasādāttariṣyasi | atha cettvamahaṃkārānna śroṣyasi vinaṅkṣyasi
With your mind fixed on Me, you will cross every difficulty by My grace. But if out of ego you will not listen, you will perish.
yadahaṃkāramāśritya na yotsya iti manyase | mithyaiṣa vyavasāyaste prakṛtistvāṃ niyokṣyati
If, relying on ego, you think 'I will not fight', your resolve is in vain; your own nature will compel you.
svabhāvajena kaunteya nibaddhaḥ svena karmaṇā | kartuṃ necchasi yanmohātkariṣyasyavaśo'pi tat
Bound by your own work born of your nature, O Kaunteya, what you do not wish to do out of delusion, you will do even against your will.
īśvaraḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ hṛddeśe'rjuna tiṣṭhati | bhrāmayansarvabhūtāni yantrārūḍhāni māyayā
Ishvara dwells in the heart of all beings, O Arjuna, turning them all by His maya, as if mounted on a machine.
tameva śaraṇaṃ gaccha sarvabhāvena bhārata | tatprasādātparāṃ śāntiṃ sthānaṃ prāpsyasi śāśvatam
Take refuge in Him alone with your whole being, O Bharata. By His grace you will gain supreme peace and the eternal abode.
iti te jñānamākhyātaṃ guhyādguhyataraṃ mayā | vimṛśyaitadaśeṣeṇa yathecchasi tathā kuru
Thus I have given you knowledge more secret than all that is secret. Reflect on it fully, then do as you wish.
sarvaguhyatamaṃ bhūyaḥ śṛṇu me paramaṃ vacaḥ | iṣṭo'si me dṛḍhamiti tato vakṣyāmi te hitam
Hear again My supreme word, the most secret of all. You are dearly loved by Me, therefore I shall tell you what is for your good.
manmanā bhava madbhakto madyājī māṃ namaskuru | māmevaiṣyasi satyaṃ te pratijāne priyo'si me
Fix your mind on Me, be My devotee, worship Me, bow down to Me. You will come to Me alone; I promise you in truth, for you are dear to Me.
sarvadharmānparityajya māmekaṃ śaraṇaṃ vraja | ahaṃ tvāṃ sarvapāpebhyo mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ
Giving up all dharmas, take refuge in Me alone. I shall free you from all sins; do not grieve.
This is never to be spoken to one without austerity, nor to one without devotion, nor to one who does not wish to listen, nor to one who finds fault with Me.
ya imaṃ paramaṃ guhyaṃ madbhakteṣvabhidhāsyati | bhaktiṃ mayi parāṃ kṛtvā māmevaiṣyatyasaṃśayaḥ
One who teaches this supreme secret to My devotees, having shown the highest devotion to Me, will without doubt come to Me.
na ca tasmānmanuṣyeṣu kaścinme priyakṛttamaḥ | bhavitā na ca me tasmādanyaḥ priyataro bhuvi
No one among men does Me dearer service than he, and no one on earth will be dearer to Me than he.
adhyeṣyate ca ya imaṃ dharmyaṃ saṃvādamāvayoḥ | jñānayajñena tenāhamiṣṭaḥ syāmiti me matiḥ
And one who studies this sacred dialogue of ours, by him I shall be worshipped through the yajna of knowledge; such is My view.
śraddhāvānanasūyaśca śṛṇuyādapi yo naraḥ | so'pi muktaḥ śubhā~llokānprāpnuyātpuṇyakarmaṇām
And the person who only listens to it with faith and without fault-finding, he too, freed, will reach the auspicious worlds of those who do righteous deeds.
kaccidetacchrutaṃ pārtha tvayaikāgreṇa cetasā | kaccidajñānasaṃmohaḥ pranaṣṭaste dhanaṃjaya
Have you heard this, O Partha, with a single-pointed mind? Has your delusion born of ignorance been destroyed, O Dhananjaya?
Arjuna said अर्जुन उवाच
naṣṭo mohaḥ smṛtirlabdhā tvatprasādānmayācyuta | sthito'smi gatasandehaḥ kariṣye vacanaṃ tava
My delusion is gone, and by Your grace I have regained my memory, O Achyuta. I stand firm, free of doubt. I shall do as You say.
Sanjaya said सञ्जय उवाच
ityahaṃ vāsudevasya pārthasya ca mahātmanaḥ | saṃvādamimamaśrauṣamadbhutaṃ romaharṣaṇam
Thus I have heard this wondrous dialogue between Vasudeva and the great-souled Partha, which makes the hair stand on end.
vyāsaprasādācchrutavānetadguhyamahaṃ param | yogaṃ yogeśvarātkṛṣṇātsākṣātkathayataḥ svayam
By the grace of Vyasa I heard this supreme and secret yoga directly from Krishna, the lord of yoga, as He Himself spoke it.
rājansaṃsmṛtya saṃsmṛtya saṃvādamimamadbhutam | keśavārjunayoḥ puṇyaṃ hṛṣyāmi ca muhurmuhuḥ
O King, as I recall again and again this wondrous and holy dialogue between Keshava and Arjuna, I rejoice again and again.
tacca saṃsmṛtya saṃsmṛtya rūpamatyadbhutaṃ hareḥ | vismayo me mahān rājanhṛṣyāmi ca punaḥ punaḥ
And as I recall again and again that most wondrous form of Hari, great is my amazement, O King, and I rejoice again and again.
yatra yogeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇo yatra pārtho dhanurdharaḥ | tatra śrīrvijayo bhūtirdhruvā nītirmatirmama
Wherever there is Krishna, the lord of yoga, and wherever there is Partha, the bearer of the bow, there are fortune, victory, prosperity and firm righteous conduct. This is my conviction.
