Chapter 14

Gunatraya Vibhaga Yoga — the Yoga of the Division of the Three Gunas

27 shlokas

The chapter in brief

Shri Krishna opens with the highest of all knowledge, the knowledge by which the munis reached perfection and are no longer born at creation nor shaken at dissolution. The great Prakriti is his womb; he places the seed in it, and he is the father who gives the seed to every form in every womb. Three gunas born of Prakriti bind the embodied one. Sattva is clear and full of light, and binds through attachment to happiness and knowledge. Rajas is passion, born of craving, and binds through attachment to action. Tamas is born of ignorance and binds through carelessness, sloth and sleep. Each overpowers the others in turn, and each shows its signs in the body and mind; each also decides where a soul goes at death. Arjuna asks how one who has gone beyond the gunas lives. Krishna answers: he is even in pain and pleasure, praise and blame, honour and dishonour, and serves Bhagwan with unswerving devotion. Bhagwan is the ground of Brahman.

Shri Bhagavan said श्रीभगवानुवाच

14.1

paraṃ bhūyaḥ pravakṣyāmi jñānānāṃ jñānamuttamam |
yajjñātvā munayaḥ sarve parāṃ siddhimito gatāḥ

Once more I shall declare the supreme knowledge, the highest of all knowledge, knowing which all the munis passed from here to the highest perfection.

14.2

idaṃ jñānamupāśritya mama sādharmyamāgatāḥ |
sarge'pi nopajāyante pralaye na vyathanti ca

Taking refuge in this knowledge, they come to share my nature. They are not born at the time of creation, nor are they troubled at the dissolution.

14.3

mama yonirmahadbrahma tasmingarbhaṃ dadhāmyaham |
saṃbhavaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ tato bhavati bhārata

The great Brahman, Prakriti, is my womb; in it I place the seed. From that, Bharata, all beings come to birth.

14.4

sarvayoniṣu kaunteya mūrtayaḥ saṃbhavanti yāḥ |
tāsāṃ brahma mahadyonirahaṃ bījapradaḥ pitā

Kaunteya, whatever forms are born in all the wombs, the great Brahman is their womb, and I am the father who gives the seed.

14.5

sattvaṃ rajastama iti guṇāḥ prakṛtisaṃbhavāḥ |
nibadhnanti mahābāho dehe dehinamavyayam

Sattva, rajas and tamas: these gunas born of Prakriti bind the imperishable embodied one in the body, mighty-armed one.

14.6

tatra sattvaṃ nirmalatvātprakāśakamanāmayam |
sukhasaṅgena badhnāti jñānasaṅgena cānagha

Of these, sattva, being stainless, gives light and is free of affliction. It binds, sinless one, through attachment to happiness and attachment to knowledge.

14.7

rajo rāgātmakaṃ viddhi tṛṣṇāsaṅgasamudbhavam |
tannibadhnāti kaunteya karmasaṅgena dehinam

Know rajas to be of the nature of passion, springing from craving and attachment. It binds the embodied one, Kaunteya, through attachment to action.

14.8

tamastvajñānajaṃ viddhi mohanaṃ sarvadehinām |
pramādālasyanidrābhistannibadhnāti bhārata

Know tamas to be born of ignorance, deluding all embodied beings. It binds, Bharata, through carelessness, sloth and sleep.

14.9

sattvaṃ sukhe saṃjayati rajaḥ karmaṇi bhārata |
jñānamāvṛtya tu tamaḥ pramāde saṃjayatyuta

Sattva ties one to happiness, rajas to action, Bharata; but tamas, veiling knowledge, ties one to carelessness.

14.10

rajastamaścābhibhūya sattvaṃ bhavati bhārata |
rajaḥ sattvaṃ tamaścaiva tamaḥ sattvaṃ rajastathā

Sattva rises, Bharata, overpowering rajas and tamas; rajas rises, overpowering sattva and tamas; and tamas likewise, overpowering sattva and rajas.

14.11

sarvadvāreṣu dehe'sminprakāśa upajāyate |
jñānaṃ yadā tadā vidyādvivṛddhaṃ sattvamityuta

When the light of knowledge shines through every gate of this body, then know that sattva has grown strong.

14.12

lobhaḥ pravṛttirārambhaḥ karmaṇāmaśamaḥ spṛhā |
rajasyetāni jāyante vivṛddhe bharatarṣabha

Greed, restless activity, the starting of ventures, unrest and longing: these arise when rajas grows strong, best of the Bharatas.

14.13

aprakāśo'pravṛttiśca pramādo moha eva ca |
tamasyetāni jāyante vivṛddhe kurunandana

Darkness, inertia, carelessness and delusion: these arise when tamas grows strong, joy of the Kurus.

14.14

yadā sattve pravṛddhe tu pralayaṃ yāti dehabhṛt |
tadottamavidāṃ lokānamalānpratipadyate

If the embodied one meets death when sattva prevails, he reaches the pure worlds of those who know the highest.

14.15

rajasi pralayaṃ gatvā karmasaṅgiṣu jāyate |
tathā pralīnastamasi mūḍhayoniṣu jāyate

Dying in rajas, one is born among those attached to action. Dying in tamas, one is born in deluded wombs.

14.16

karmaṇaḥ sukṛtasyāhuḥ sāttvikaṃ nirmalaṃ phalam |
rajasastu phalaṃ duḥkhamajñānaṃ tamasaḥ phalam

The fruit of good action is said to be sattvic and pure. The fruit of rajas is sorrow, and the fruit of tamas is ignorance.

14.17

sattvātsaṃjāyate jñānaṃ rajaso lobha eva ca |
pramādamohau tamaso bhavato'jñānameva ca

From sattva knowledge is born, from rajas greed, and from tamas come carelessness, delusion and ignorance.

14.18

ūrdhvaṃ gacchanti sattvasthā madhye tiṣṭhanti rājasāḥ |
jaghanyaguṇavṛttisthā adho gacchanti tāmasāḥ

Those established in sattva rise upward; the rajasic stay in the middle; the tamasic, living in the lowest guna, go downward.

14.19

nānyaṃ guṇebhyaḥ kartāraṃ yadā draṣṭānupaśyati |
guṇebhyaśca paraṃ vetti madbhāvaṃ so'dhigacchati

When the seer beholds no doer other than the gunas, and knows that which is beyond the gunas, he attains my being.

14.20

guṇānetānatītya trīndehī dehasamudbhavān |
janmamṛtyujarāduḥkhairvimukto'mṛtamaśnute

Going beyond these three gunas from which the body arises, the embodied one is freed from birth, death, old age and sorrow, and tastes immortality.

Arjuna said अर्जुन उवाच

14.21

kairliṅgaistrīnguṇānetānatīto bhavati prabho |
kimācāraḥ kathaṃ caitāṃstrīnguṇānativartate

Prabhu, by what marks is one known who has gone beyond these three gunas? How does he conduct himself, and how does he pass beyond them?

Shri Bhagavan said श्रीभगवानुवाच

14.22

prakāśaṃ ca pravṛttiṃ ca mohameva ca pāṇḍava |
na dveṣṭi saṃpravṛttāni na nivṛttāni kāṅkṣati

Pandava, he does not resent light, activity or delusion when they arise, nor long for them when they cease.

14.23

udāsīnavadāsīno guṇairyo na vicālyate |
guṇā vartanta ityeva yo'vatiṣṭhati neṅgate

He sits as one indifferent, unshaken by the gunas. Knowing that only the gunas are at work, he stays firm and does not waver.

14.24

samaduḥkhasukhaḥ svasthaḥ samaloṣṭāśmakāñcanaḥ |
tulyapriyāpriyo dhīrastulyanindātmasaṃstutiḥ

Alike in sorrow and joy, rooted in the Self, he sees a clod, a stone and gold as the same. The pleasant and unpleasant are equal to him; he is steady, and blame and praise of himself weigh the same.

14.25

mānāpamānayostulyastulyo mitrāripakṣayoḥ |
sarvārambhaparityāgī guṇātītaḥ sa ucyate

Alike in honour and dishonour, alike to friend and foe, having given up all self-driven undertakings: he is said to have gone beyond the gunas.

14.26

māṃ ca yo'vyabhicāreṇa bhaktiyogena sevate |
sa guṇānsamatītyaitānbrahmabhūyāya kalpate

One who serves me with the yoga of unswerving devotion goes beyond these gunas and becomes fit to be one with Brahman.

14.27

brahmaṇo hi pratiṣṭhāhamamṛtasyāvyayasya ca |
śāśvatasya ca dharmasya sukhasyaikāntikasya ca

For I am the ground of Brahman, of the immortal and imperishable, of eternal dharma and of perfect bliss.
