01Swaraj begins
Torna was a Bijapur fort, lightly held. Around 1646, the young Shivaji and his Mavala companions took it without a real fight and he named it Prachandagad, the mighty fort. Maratha chronicles say that while repairing the walls his men found a buried treasure, which paid for the fortification of nearby Murumbdev, renamed Rajgad. The fort runs along a long narrow ridge, with the Budhla and Zunjar machis at its two ends and the small temple of Menghai Devi near the gate.
