01Brought in 1761

The murti came to Jaipur in 1761 with Seth Jai Ram Paliwal, who travelled in the train of Maharaja Madho Singh I; the temple tradition holds that the image was already old then, and that the spot for the shrine was chosen where the cart carrying it stopped. The temple stands at the foot of Moti Dungri, the hill with a small fort on top that later became a palace of the Jaipur royal family. The Birla temple of Lakshmi Narayan stands a few steps away.

02Wednesdays and Ganesh Chaturthi

Wednesday is Ganesh’s day and the queue runs into the road. Families bring the first card of every wedding to be placed before him, and the priests tie the sacred thread on new scooters and cars in the forecourt. On Ganesh Chaturthi the temple stays open through the night and a great fair spreads along Jawaharlal Nehru Marg. The murti is dressed in vermilion and silver, with Riddhi and Siddhi at his sides.
