The Persian foundation inscription of Delhi’s first mosque, which itself states that it was built from the materials of twenty-seven temples.

What it says

It records that the fort was conquered and the Jami mosque built in the year 587 by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, and says, in J. A. Page’s translation: “The materials of 27 idol temples, on each of which 20,00,000 Deliwals had been spent, were used in the construction of the mosque.” The carved pillars of the cloisters still show bells, chains, kirtimukhas and figures, some defaced.

What it proves

The builders’ own words record the demolition of 27 temples of Prithviraj Chauhan’s Delhi right after the second battle of Tarain; the pillars themselves bear it out.
