Prithviraja Vijaya of Jayanaka

Found
A single incomplete birch-bark manuscript in Sharada script, found in Kashmir by Georg Bühler in 1875
Kept at
Printed edition with Jonaraja’s commentary (Ojha and Guleri, 1941)

A Sanskrit mahakavya by Jayanaka, a Kashmiri poet at the court of Prithviraj Chauhan, written in the king’s lifetime.

What it says

It gives the Chahamana genealogy from Vasudeva and Ajayaraja, founder of Ajayameru (Ajmer), down to Someshvara and his son Prithviraj, and describes Prithviraj’s youth and his resolve against the Ghurid. The manuscript breaks off before the battles of Tarain.

What it proves

It is the only contemporary Sanskrit account of Prithviraj, far older and more reliable than the later Prithviraj Raso.
