The official history of Aurangzeb’s fifty-year reign, year by year.

What it says

In April 1669 the emperor ordered the governors of all provinces to demolish the schools and temples of the Hindus. In September 1669 it was reported that the temple of Vishwanath at Kashi had been demolished. In January 1670 the Keshava Rai temple at Mathura was destroyed, and its jewelled images taken to Agra and buried under the steps of the Begum Sahib mosque. In 1679 the jizya was reimposed on Hindus.

What it proves

It is the Mughal court’s own record of these orders, so the demolitions at Kashi and Mathura rest on the emperor’s official history.
